The early days in Bibb County and Jones County, Georgia which today includes the communities of Macon, Gray, Hadock, Huber and Lizella, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this spiral bound booklet reprinted primarily from two rare books: the Rev. George White's "Historical Collections of Georgia" and "Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside", a WPA publication. The NEW 34 page booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading. A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color front cover. The excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until its publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: Early Settlers, Residents who lived past 80; Notable citizens, including Judge Christopher Strong, the Rev. Seneca Bragg, and the Hon. Eugenius A. Nesvit (2 page bio); two Jones County Revolutionary War soldiers: Benjamin Reynolds and John Lamar; Educational Institutions; a description of Rose Hill Cemetery; Findley's Foundry and Nesbet and Levy's Ocmulgee Foundry and other industries; Indian Mounds; Fort Hawkins; Macon in the Civil War; the Farmers' Market; a map of Macon and Points of Interest -- the Citizens and Southern National Bank, the Municipal Auditorium, Wesleyan Fine Arts Conservatory, Washington Memorial Library, Mercer University, the Home of Sidney Lanier; the City Hall, the Johnston (Hay) House, the Ralph Small House, etc.; a trial in Jones County involving impersonation; the Hitchiti Experimental Forest; the Agriculture crisis and the boll weevil; the Blount House with an "eyebrow" window and a long spiral staircase, near Haddock; the Clinton Methodist Church, Georgia Baptist College; Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge with 140 species of birds; 1850 Census Statistics; and other bits of history and trivia.
